"Our goal for the week is to remind the public that the library is an ideal place to let your imagination run wild," Dubé said. "This week will highlight the valuable role our public libraries play as gateways to literacy and the vast world of ideas, to books, knowledge, lifelong learning and imagination."
"Public libraries have great books, the Internet, exhibits, storytime, DVDs, music, magazines and programs that will inform the mind and stimulate the imagination," said Sylvie Nadeau, executive director of the New Brunswick Public Library Service. "I would encourage everyone to visit their local library during Public Libraries Week to learn more about these resources as well as all the services the public library has to offer."
In addition to providing New Brunswickers with access to materials for recreational reading and research purposes, public libraries also play an important role in the province's literacy efforts, Dubé said.
"Our public libraries offer a host of reading programs for all ages," she said. "People who read, succeed, and public libraries are a key part of the Province's literacy and lifelong learning goals."
The official launch of Public Libraries Week will take place Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Saint John Free Public Library. It will feature a reading by Richard B. Wright, winner of both the Governor General's Literary Award and the Giller Prize for his book Clara Callan.
