Surrender to Reading / Public Libraries Week (04/10/14)

NB 1135

Oct. 14, 2004

FREDERICTON (CNB) - 'Surrender to Reading' is the theme of Public Libraries Week, taking place Oct. 18 - 24, and Education Minister Madeleine Dubé invites all New Brunswickers to rediscover the joy of reading.

"This year, we want to remind the public that reading a good book is one of the greatest pleasures in life," Dubé said. "There is nothing quite like curling up in a quiet corner, opening a book, and feeling you have embarked on a journey to an unknown world."

As usual, a number of activities have been planned in honour of Public Libraries Week. Many of the libraries will be organizing story hours, exhibits, talks on various topics, chats with authors, workshops with local artisans, and contests where people can vote for their favourite book.

"As people read, their lives change," the minister said. "Not only do they nurture their imagination, but they gain new perspectives on the world. To begin this journey, all they have to do is visit a public library and chose from the vast collection of books at their disposal."

The New Brunswick public library system provides access to a provincial collection of more than 1.8 million items, as well as to programs and services ranging from story hour to public lectures to services such as reference, inter-library loans, and Internet access.

For more details about the activities taking place throughout the province during Public Libraries Week, contact your public library or visit the website at http://www.gnb.ca/publiclibraries.
