Public libraries to benefit from fundraising campaign (05/10/18)

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The New Brunswick Public Libraries Foundation today launched its provincial fundraising campaign for public libraries and bookmobiles.

Strong Libraries, Stronger Communities is a campaign that is seeking support from individuals and corporations to increase the number of books and other materials in public libraries and bookmobiles.

Serving as honorary co-chairs are Glenn Murray, the author of Walter the Farting Dog, and noted francophone author and publisher Marguerite Maillet of Bouton d'or Acadie Press.

"Libraries are literally information powerhouses," Murray said. "The objective of this campaign is to increase the number of children's books, books for adults, large print materials, and talking books for the visually impaired, and to generally improve the library collection in various areas."

Over the coming weeks, households in New Brunswick with an adult public library card holder will receive a campaign mail out from the foundation that explains the various needs of public libraries and bookmobiles. The letter encourages individuals to make a donation to the foundation, and enables them to direct their donation to the subject area of their interest.

"Although New Brunswickers have access to significant public libraries holdings, it is vital that information on science and art continues to be updated on a regular basis," Maillet said. "By having access to new and cutting-edge knowledge in our public libraries, we are building a more enlightened and dynamic province. The foundation's fundraising campaign plays an important role in reaching that goal."

Through this fundraiser, New Brunswickers will have the opportunity to support a community institution that has a longstanding tradition of loyalty to the people of New Brunswick. The provincial government will match donations dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000.

"Public libraries play a critical role in supporting communities in their efforts to embrace the culture of lifelong learning," Education Minister Madeleine Dubé said. "It is my sincere hope that all New Brunswickers will take advantage of this opportunity to assist the New Brunswick Public Libraries Foundation in its fundraising efforts."

As a special addition to the fundraising campaign, all donors will be eligible to win prizes, including autographed books from Lt.-Gov. Herménégilde Chiasson and pizza from Pizza Delight.

The New Brunswick Public Libraries Foundation is a charitable organization that raises funds in support of New Brunswick's public library system. The activities of the foundation are overseen by a board of trustees responsible for the management of the foundation's trust fund.
