FREDERICTON (CNB) - A new library automation system will greatly enhance the service of New Brunswick's public libraries, Education Minister Madeleine Dubé announced today.

The New Brunswick Public Library Service is installing Unicorn to replace its existing Inlex automated system.

"The transition to a new automated library system is designed to better serve our patrons," Dubé said. "We are excited about the upgrade, which will increase access and efficiency and make our patrons' library experience even better."

With the new Unicorn system library users will notice a number of improvements, including:

The installation of the new system will take place between Dec. 19, 2005 and Jan. 2, 2006. During this time, all New Brunswick public libraries and bookmobiles will be closed to ensure that the information in the new system is current and accurate when it goes online Jan. 3, 2006.

"We regret that it is not possible to upgrade the automated system without temporarily closing our public libraries and bookmobiles," Dube said. "We hope that this advance notice will minimize any inconveniences for our patrons."

As a result of the upgrade, library users will benefit from an extended loan period of up to eight weeks to ensure that their library materials are not due back before libraries and bookmobiles reopen to the public.

The New Brunswick public library system provides access to a provincial collection of more than 1.9 million items, as well as to programs ranging from story hour to public lectures, and offers such services as reference, inter-library loans, and Internet access.
