BATHURST (CNB) - The official opening for the new $8.5-million Terry Fox Elementary School in Bathurst was held today.
Education Minister Kelly Lamrock and Betty and Rolly Fox joined students, teachers, parents and School District 15 representatives to celebrate the event.
"Students, teachers and staff expect and deserve to learn, teach and work in the best possible environment," Lamrock said. "Our Charter for Change calls for New Brunswick to become a leader in education. Strengthening schools to provide the most modern, state-of-the-art facilities is an important step in achieving this objective."
Terry Fox Elementary School has 22 classrooms, a resource centre and music room, as well as a gymnasium, cafeteria, and new outdoor playing fields. The new school was needed to replace three aging schools: South Bathurst Elementary School, Mary Gosnell Elementary School and Coronation Park Elementary School.
"This important project came together in close partnership with the community, School District 15, staff, students and other stakeholders," Supply and Services Minister Roly MacIntyre said. "Building and opening this new facility is a celebration of the investment we are making in the education system and in the children of this province."
Located on Basin Road, Terry Fox Elementary School is the first school in Atlantic Canada to be named for the man who captured the hearts of Canadians when he embarked on his Marathon of Hope journey to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 18. In 1980 he ran 5,373 kilometres from St. John's, N.L. to Thunder Bay, Ont. before being forced to stop when the cancer spread to his lungs. Fox died on June 28, 1981, at the age of 22.
Terry Fox Elementary School currently has 398 students in kindergarten to Grade 5.
