EducationDesignation of 13 community schools - anglophone sector (07/12/10)NB 1589 Dec. 10, 2007 QUISPAMSIS (CNB) - As part of the When kids come first education plan, an additional 13 anglophone sector schools have been designated community schools, Education Minister Kelly Lamrock announced today. A community school encourages the community to become more active in the life of a school and in assisting kids to learn. It also helps kids to develop a sense of belonging and commitment to their community. In the francophone sector, this initiative also helps kids to build their cultural and linguistic identity. "Engaging communities and partners in improving schools and academic achievement is essential to the success of building the best education system in the country," Lamrock said. "Community groups, businesses, schools, teachers and parents have all recognized the importance each can play in providing hands-on learning experiences for children in their own community. Their collective response to the community schools initiative that we launched in June has been tremendous, and we are well on our way to meeting our goal of 75 designated community schools." Community schools use community resources such as volunteer groups, parents, public services and recreational and cultural opportunities to turn a school into a centre of opportunity for children, youth, families and communities before, during and after school hours. To date, 30 schools from both the anglophone and francophone sectors have received the designation as community schools. The latest 13 anglophone sector schools to be designated under the Community Schools initiative are:
"By investing and forming partnerships with businesses and community we will meet our goal of becoming a self-sufficient province," Family and Community Services Minister Mary Schryer said. "With a strong community involvement, Quispamsis Elementary School and all the other designated community schools will transform into community centres of learning that will provide a full and diverse learning experience to the benefit of everyone, most importantly our children." This year, $2.5 million is being invested by the Department of Education into the Community Schools initiative. The government plans to establish 75 community schools by 2012. 07/12/10 EDITOR'S NOTE: A complete list of designated community schools follows.
