FREDERICTON (CNB) - Funding from the Innovative Learning Fund totalling $335,781 has been approved for 15 Tier 2 & 3 projects, Education Minister Kelly Lamrock announced today.

The Innovative Learning Fund is a key component of When kids come first, and is designed to provide financial support to innovative educators by investing in original projects, led by teachers and school teams, which can subsequently be shared with and replicated in other schools. The fund is available for any teacher, school or school district that is part of the New Brunswick public education system.

"If we want to build the best education system in the country, our teachers need support for the innovative ideas they have to offer our students," Lamrock said. "The Innovative Learning Fund provides our teachers with the resources they need for their projects, and gives them the opportunity to share their best teaching practices with other educators, so new and exciting leaning environments can be created for our kids."

In this round of funding, 10 Tier 2 projects from the francophone sector will receive a total of $179,190 from the Innovative Learning Fund.

In the anglophone sector, the Innovative Learning Fund will contribute to two Tier 2 projects for a total of $26,838 and to three Tier 3 projects for a total of $129,753.

Tier 2 projects require the collaboration of at least two educators (teachers, school principals, or

education consultants) in two or more classrooms in the same school or in different schools. The

Innovative Learning Fund may allocate between $2,500 and $20,000 to the total cost of the proposed project. These projects require the participation of a third party, unrelated to the school system, to finance at least 25 per cent of the project's cost.

Tier 3 projects may receive a financial contribution of between $20,000 and $100,000 per project from the Fund and require the participation of a financial third party equivalent to 20 per cent of the total cost of the project.

Lamrock today also announced that funding for 34 Tier 1 projects totalling $73,999 was approved for the anglophone sector, and funding for 18 projects totalling $41,771 was granted in the francophone sector. These Tier 1 projects are single classroom initiatives that were eligible for funding up to $2,500 each.

"The Innovative Learning Fund fulfills our commitment to encourage teachers to take the liberty of exploring new ways of engaging student learning," Lamrock said. "Allowing our teachers and schools to be innovative will help us move forward in achieving self-sufficiency for New Brunswick."

Over the past two months, 178 projects totalling $710,814 have been funded by the Innovative Learning Fund. The projects are linked with the commitments made in When kids come first in areas such as literacy, numeracy, science and technology, and positive interventions.

Assessment of Innovative Learning Fund project applications is ongoing, with more projects to be announced in the coming months.
