ST. STEPHEN (CNB) - A celebration was held today to officially open the newly renovated St. Stephen Elementary School.
Education Minister Kelly Lamrock and Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet joined students, teachers, parents and School District 10 representatives for a ceremony at the school to mark the project's completion.
The $4.2 million project includes two new classrooms, a new gymnasium, a renovated cafetorium and kitchen, new parking and school bus drop off areas, new windows, and upgrades to the school's fire systems.
"In our effort to build the best education system in the country, we need to ensure that students and teachers will learn and teach in buildings that are modern, updated and in good repair," Lamrock said. "The work undertaken at St. Stephen Elementary School demonstrates the commitments we have made in When kids come first to create healthy and safe schools."
The school expansion began in July 2006 and was completed in the fall of 2007. The construction work was carried out by Avondale Construction Ltd. of Saint John.
"Capital construction projects like this one in St. Stephen allow the province and the construction industry to be partners in building a more self-sufficient province," acting Supply and Services Minister Jack Keir said. "These renovations were undertaken to meet the needs of a growing student population and to provide a safety upgrade to the school building's operating systems. I am sure the students, staff and the community will enjoy the new improvements made to their school."
Built in 1969, St. Stephen Elementary School accommodates about 600 students from kindergarten to Grade 5.
