PAQUETVILLE (CNB) - The official launch of the 20th annual Provincial French Pride Week took place this morning at École communautaire Terre des Jeunes in Paquetville. "I am pleased to be here at this special time, which has become one of the most anticipated celebrations by all students and francophones in New Brunswick," said Lamrock. "Over the years, this week has become a major event in the school year, and echoes our education plan When Kids Come First, which treats linguistic and cultural identity-building as an integral part of our children's school success."

For a week, students, school staff, and community partners will take part in various cultural and sports activities, including performances, games, and contests, which celebrate and promote the French language and francophone diversity in New Brunswick and elsewhere.

This year, Provincial French Pride Week will highlight the coming of thousands of Acadian cousins to the Acadian Peninsula during the World Acadian Congress in August. The slogan, Francophones de tous les pays, venez fêter en Acadie was suggested by the students of École Académie Assomption in Bathurst, and it will commemorate both the World Acadian Congress and the 20th anniversary of Provincial French Pride Week.

"This slogan reminds us that we will soon be celebrating with millions of francophones, francophiles, and persons of Acadian descent, this language that is, with English, one of the only two languages spoken on the five continents," said Lamrock.

The closing ceremony of Provincial French Pride Week will take place on March 20, which is International Francophonie Day. Minister of Wellness, Culture and Sport Hédard Albert, who is minister responsible for the Francophonie, will be at Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux in Caraquet to present the prizes to winners of the various contests organized in connection with Provincial French Pride Week.
