SAINT JOHN (CNB) - Students participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to mark the official opening of a new gymnasium at Bayside Middle School in Saint John. Minister of Supply and Services Ed Doherty, Saint John East MLA Roly MacIntyre, and District 8 officials attended.
The ceremony included the announcement that a tender worth $1.1 million for new cafeteria and kitchen services has been awarded to Bird Construction of Saint John.
"Our government has made a $5.5-million investment in this renovation project," said Doherty. "Students are already enjoying this great new gym facility, and I am pleased to say that we expect the new cafeteria and kitchen facilities will be available in December of this year."
Minister of Education Kelly Lamrock said that in order for New Brunswick to realize its potential to become self-sufficient, investments in becoming a healthy province with a well-educated population are needed.
"A new gymnasium and cafeteria at Bayside will encourage students to be active and make healthy choices at school and at home," said Lamrock. "These habits will help them be better students in school, and, later in life, be more productive as adults in our workforce. We are proud to be a part of this project, which moves us one step closer to building the best education system in Canada, and becoming a self-sufficient New Brunswick."
A tender for the final phase of the project is scheduled for spring 2010. Work in Phase 3 will include corridor upgrades and enhanced fire protection. Construction is expected to be complete for the 2010 school year.
