BERESFORD (CNB) - Students at École Carrefour Étudiant in Beresford will have a larger gymnasium and a new stage as of September 2011.
Education Minister Roland Haché today revealed the architectural plans for the $1.9-million project, which will involve expanding the gymnasium area, adding bleachers, and adding a stage attached to the existing cafeteria to make it into a theatre. The call for tenders has just been issued. Construction is to begin in September.
"We must offer students an environment that helps them to reach their full potential with respect to academic knowledge, creativity, and critical skills, and also provide a school that promotes an active, healthy life," Haché said. "Our children's education is essential to the growth of our economy. We must make sure that every part of our education system is of excellent quality so that our young people acquire the skills and knowledge they need to be successful here in New Brunswick."
The Department of Education has invested $500,000 from its 2010-11 capital budget in the project. This is in addition to the funding allocated to Polyvalente Roland-Pépin in Campbellton and École Régionale Restigouche-Est, and to the renovation and capital improvement projects for seven schools in School District 5. In total, the provincial government has invested close to $9 million in renovations and improvements to educational facilities in its latest budget for schools in this school district.
"This project is very important to our students and to the community," said Louise Hachey-Neveu, school principal. "The expansion of the gym will make it more safe and will allow us to provide more time for physical activity for our students and for the community. In recent years, our school's cultural life has grown significantly. That is why the addition of a stage and bleachers to accommodate more spectators is also vital."
École Carrefour Étudiant has about 340 students from grades 1 to 8.
