FREDERICTON (CNB) - NB Power today released a request for proposals (RFP) for the purchase of up to 300 MW of wind-powered generation by November 2010 from potential private-sector developers.

"This request for proposal accelerates NB Power's original plan to have 400 MW of wind energy online by 2016," said NB Power president and CEO David Hay. "It allows NB Power to provide New Brunswickers energy from this renewable resource sooner, minimizing our environmental footprint."

NB Power will evaluate the proposals based on pricing, schedule for development, yearly production, reliability of supply and added New Brunswick content.

"We are pleased with NB Power's continuing efforts that allow us to considerably accelerate the wind energy program in New Brunswick," Energy Minister Jack Keir said. "Adding New Brunswick content to the request for proposals is extremely important, as it will help foster greater economic development here at home, and create more job opportunities for New Brunswickers."

NB Power will ensure geographical diversity in the wind projects. This will allow NB Power to purchase wind energy from wind generators in areas experiencing high winds, at times when wind in other areas of the province may be too low to generate any electricity from a single site. The five wind areas are the Bay of Fundy, Tantramar, Miramichi Bay, Acadie/Chaleur and in-land New Brunswick.

NB Power recently signed two agreements for 96 MW of wind energy in southeastern New Brunswick. The development of wind energy projects will increase the supply of clean, renewable energy in the province, resulting in local economic development, increased diversity of power supply and a greater reliance on domestic resources for electricity generated and sold in New Brunswick.
