FREDERICTON (CNB) - A growth committee has been established to help the Minto-Chipman area move forward in light of the pending closure of NB Coal Ltd., Energy Minister Jack Keir announced today. The committee consists of community leaders from Minto and Chipman as well as federal and provincial representatives.
"We understand the important role that NB Coal Ltd. and the Grand Lake generating station have played in Chipman and Minto, and we are actively involved with the community on moving forward after the closure," said Keir. "We established this committee to look at how best we can support the entire community, and this includes job creation as well as future business development opportunities for the Grand Lake area."
NB Power announced on Sept. 29 the closure of the Grand Lake generating station and NB Coal Ltd. NB Coal Ltd. will shut down Dec. 31. NB Power will close the generating station when its operating licence expires in June 2010. The generating station is the sole customer of NB Coal Ltd.
