Update / Chromium trioxide spill in Fredericton area (08/10/28)

NB 1584

Oct. 28, 2008

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Department of Health has advised about a dozen homeowners in the Evergreen Park area outside Fredericton not to consume their well water, use it for bathing, or use it in any other way which would bring it into contact with the body.

The advisory was delivered to the affected homes on Monday, following a spill of chromium trioxide in the area. No other water supplies in the area are considered at-risk at this time, so residents who are not advised otherwise may continue to consume their well water.

The departments of Environment and Health are working together to determine the impact of the spill on ground water supplies.

Monitoring wells are being drilled to determine the extent of contamination, and to provide for accurate measurements of direction and flow of groundwater. This will allow for appropriate action.

Affected and area residents will be notified of any further developments.
