BURTON (CNB) - NB Coal Ltd. in Minto has been fined $1,200 by Judge Patricia Cumming after pleading guilty in Burton provincial court to violating the Environmental Impact Assessment regulation of the Clean Environment Act.

The Department of Environment charged NB Coal Ltd. with starting an undertaking before the minister of environment determined whether the company could carry out that undertaking without the completion of an environmental impact assessment (EIA).

The company applied to re-open the Albright's Corner Mine, which required an EIA. Part of this project included the relocation of the dragline from the Salmon Harbour mine to a new location more than 13 km away.

Prior to the minister issuing a determination, the company began the construction of the walkway to accommodate the relocation of the dragline.
