MINTO (CNB) - Nominations are now open for the 2010 Environmental Leadership Award. The deadline is Friday, May 21.

Environment Minister Rick Miles made the announcement at Minto Elementary and Middle School in Minto in celebration of Earth Day.

"I am pleased to announce the nomination period for the 2010 Environmental Leadership Awards," said Miles. "I encourage New Brunswickers to nominate any person, group, community or business that has made exceptional efforts to be a good steward of the environment in New Brunswick."

There are six award categories this year:

All nominations should include a project or activity description of 250 or fewer words.

Following the deadline for nominations, an independent judging panel will choose the top candidates in each category. Winners will be presented with their awards later this year.

For more information or to submit a nomination, contact the Department of Environment at 506-453-3700; by e-mail at award-prix@gnb.ca, or visit the Department of Environment website.

"First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day has grown into the largest environmental event in the world, and it is a fitting date on which to announce the nominations for a program that celebrates the achievements of New Brunswickers who have made an outstanding contribution to protecting the environment," said Miles. "I encourage all New Brunswickers to do something good for the environment to celebrate Earth Day. Use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic; recycle your pop can; plant a tree; or walk instead of drive. Every single Earth Day initiative promotes environmental stewardship in our province."
