MIRAMICHI (CNB) - The provincial government, through the Environmental Trust Fund (ETF), is supporting an initiative to decrease illegal dumping. The announcement was made by Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General John W. Foran.

"Our government is strongly committed to promoting environmental sustainability and supporting environmental stewardship," said Foran. "Illegal dumping is certainly an issue in our province, and I am pleased that the ETF could provide $20,000 in support for this important project."

Foran was speaking on behalf of Environment Minister Rick Miles.

The Northumberland Solid Waste Commission will educate the public about illegal dumping as well as clean up several sites in the Miramichi region.

Each year the ETF provides significant support to community-based initiatives to restore, improve, preserve and protect air, land and water resources.

The Department of Environment announced in April that almost $4 million from the ETF would be invested in 172 environmental projects in 2010-11.
