June 28, 2002

FREDERICTON (CNB) -- Premier Bernard Lord today announced the appointment of Roger Doucet as acting deputy minister, francophone sector, for the Department of Education. Doucet is currently assistant deputy minister, Post-Secondary Education Division, for the department.

"I am pleased to welcome Roger as acting deputy minister and wish him the best of luck in this challenging position," Lord said. "He brings a great deal of experience to the job and I know he will continue to put that knowledge to good use as acting deputy."

Doucet came to Education from Intergovernmental Affairs in October 2001, where he served as assistant deputy minister for the Co-operation Division. He was previously with TeleEducation NB for seven years. While with TeleEducation, Doucet was instrumental in establishing distance learning in universities, public schools and the private sector.

Before joining the public service, Doucet spent more than a decade with the Université de Moncton as a lecturer, director of continuing education and research and development officer in distance education. Doucet studied at both Université Laval and Université de Moncton.

Doucet's appointment comes into effect on June 29, 2002. He replaces Raymond Daigle, deputy minister, francophone sector, who has retired after 34 years of service with the provincial public service.

Daigle began his career as a teacher in 1968. He moved to the Department of Education in 1976, moving to the former Department of Advanced Education and Training as assistant deputy minister of francophone educational services in 1988. He returned to Education in 1992 as assistant deputy minister of francophone educational services, becoming deputy minister, francophone sector in June 1997.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank Raymond Daigle for his many years of dedicated service to the people and students of our province," Lord said. "His wisdom and experience will be missed and I wish him well in his retirement."
