"The Government of Canada is committed to supporting affordable rental housing for those New Brunswickers who need it most," Leblanc said. "This investment in Richibucto not only advances our national housing strategy of creating safe, affordable housing units, but together with our partners, we are helping to build a better life for 24 seniors and individuals from Richibucto who will continue to live in this community." Leblanc spoke on behalf of federal Labour and Housing Minister Joseph Fontana.
"We are particularly pleased to get the support of the private sector in this project," Poirier said. "Its role is very important in this Affordable Rental Housing Program and we need more of similar type developments throughout the province in order to create more affordable housing for New Brunswickers." Poirier spoke on behalf of Family and Community Services Minister Tony Huntjens.
The 24-unit apartment project is being developed by Fernand and Magella Gallant to Rosaireville. Under the Affordable Housing Rental Program, the project will receive $300,000 in federal funding to offset construction costs, as well as rent supplements from the Province of New Brunswick for 12 units.
The Richibucto project brings to 17 the number of projects that are receiving funding under the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement. These projects represent a total of 210 new housing units in New Brunswick involving 154 new rent supplement units.
The Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement involves investments of over $38 million in the creation of up to 700 housing units in New Brunswick. The federal government, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), is contributing $14.98 million in capital funding. The Province of New Brunswick is investing $24 million in the form of rental subsidies over the next 10 years.
To date, commitments under the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement represent an investment of $17.63 million. This amount consists of $12.16 million in lifetime cost for rent supplements and $5.47 million in capital grant contributions.
Over the past three years, the province also delivered an additional 150 new rent supplements to landlords for existing rental units for low-income households across New Brunswick.
