FREDERICTON (CNB) - Construction began today on a 72-bed, $11-million nursing home that will open in 2010 in Fredericton.
Construction was officially launched by Social Development Minister Mary Schryer; Minister of State for Seniors Brian Kenny; and Jason Shannon, chief executive officer, Shannex Inc.
The nursing home will be part of a campus-style complex that will include independent living accommodations and special-care-home services.
The project is part of a $112-million Shannex initiative that will result in the opening of 216 new nursing home beds by 2010. About 450 staff will be employed in three new seniors complexes in Quispamsis, Riverview and Fredericton.
"I am proud that our government engaged in a pilot public-private partnership to explore an innovative approach to serving the long-term care needs of seniors," said Schryer.
Shannex will establish a corporate office in Fredericton, which will include a centre of excellence for staff training. Shannex owns and operates six nursing homes and four retirement complexes in Atlantic Canada.
"Our government is taking action to respond to an urgent need among seniors waiting for nursing home beds, including about 100 seniors in the Fredericton region," said Kenny. "Our seniors need long-term care services available in the right place, at the right time. This new facility will ensure enhanced service options for seniors in Greater Fredericton."
The Government of New Brunswick has released a 10-year strategy to strengthen the provincial long-term care system and address the future needs of the provincial senior population. The strategy, Be Independent. Longer, puts added focus on wellness and prevention, as well as exploring innovative models of long-term care services for seniors.
This announcement brings to 318 the number of beds to be created in New Brunswick within the next three years. The government has already announced the addition of 102 beds
in various regions in addition to the 75 beds at the newly opened Kings Way Care Centre in Quispamsis.
New Brunswick has 62 nursing homes offering services to more than 4,100 seniors and adults. They are privately owned and operated by boards of directors.
