Minister's message: Seniors' Month (09/06/03)

NB 784

June 3, 2009

FREDERICTON( CNB) - Minister of State for Seniors Brian Kenny has issued the following message recognizing June as Seniors' Month:

The contributions of our seniors have made New Brunswick the place we are proud to call home. They fought wars, raised families, built communities, and carved out the culture and quality of life we enjoy today.

The majority of New Brunswick seniors live independently. They are enthusiastic, energetic and on the move. This is a testament to their resourcefulness, their sense of independence, and their desire to be self-sufficient.

Wellness and active living are fundamental in order for seniors to live independently for as long as possible. It is our vision for seniors in New Brunswick, and it forms a cornerstone of our long-term-care strategy, Be Independent Longer.

In conjunction with Seniors' month, the Senior and Healthy Aging Secretariat is launching a public awareness campaign about wellness and active living for seniors, and the benefits of staying healthy and involved in the community.

The intention of this campaign is to harness the spirit of healthy, active seniors so that others may be inspired to join in the effort and improve their quality of life. The campaign will promote physical activity and the holistic point of view that wellness incorporates mind, body and spirit.

Wellness and active living are vitally important as we strive to meet the challenges of an aging population.

When we encourage our seniors to be healthy and active, we are helping to build a sustainable long-term-care system, a stronger population, and a more self-sufficient province. We are helping to make New Brunswick the place to be at any age.
