FREDERICTON (CNB) - An improvement is being made to make the disability supplement easier to obtain, Social Development Minister Kelly Lamrock announced today.
Effective Jan. 1, the disability supplement will be added to the social assistance benefits extended to persons with disabilities and will be provided monthly. Persons who were not previously eligible for the benefit may now qualify, depending on their income.
"The government made a firm commitment to address this issue and make improvements," said Lamrock. "Because of the changes we are announcing today, this supplement will be available to more people."
Previously, certified deaf, blind and disabled clients who qualified for social assistance were eligible for a once-a-year financial special benefit of $1,000. The benefit recognizes that persons with disabilities face considerable disability-related expenses and require additional support to purchase essential goods and services.
Clients who received their annual benefit in October 2009 prior to this change will start receiving this benefit monthly beginning in October 2010.
