MONCTON (CNB) - Frozen seafood appetizers produced by Ocean Pier Inc. of Scoudouc will soon be available at nearby outlets of the North American retailer Costco. Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet joined representatives from Ocean Pier at the official sales launch today.
"This is the type of value-added processing we identified in the fisheries renewal framework as being essential for the long-term viability of New Brunswick's fishing and seafood processing industry," said Doucet. "Having it sold locally by a major retail chain is an added bonus."
Ocean Pier is packaging three varieties of frozen hors d'oeuvres under the Ocean Pier brand. These products will be sold at Costco warehouses throughout eastern Canada as well as along the eastern seaboard of the United States.
"We are very excited about this great opportunity with Costco to grow our North American business with them," said Mike Breau, president of Ocean Pier.
The province recently announced it was providing Ocean Pier with more than $1.2 million in financial assistance to allow the value-added seafood processor to invest in its operations and expand its branded and private-label business.
New Brunswick is the fourth largest exporter of fish and seafood products in Canada, with total seafood production in 2007 surpassing $723 million.
