FREDERICTON (CNB) - A delegation of seafood processors and export companies from New Brunswick will join the Department of Fisheries at the Dubai International Seafood Expo in the United Arab Emirates from Oct. 27-29.
Located along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, Dubai is the most populated city of the United Arab Emirates, with annual seafood sales of close to $200 million.
"Dubai represents great potential for exports from our province to a high-end market with affluent consumers," said Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet. "Every five-star hotel in Dubai has a seafood restaurant, and with over 370 motels in the city, there are great opportunities for our seafood processors."
Following Dubai, Doucet will join the delegation at the Chinese Fisheries and Seafood Expo in Qingdao, Nov. 3-5. New Brunswick's presence at Asia's largest seafood show over the past two years has already paid off, with several Asian seafood buyers having visited the province and signed contracts to make purchases from local processors.
"Going to these international seafood expositions allows our industry to learn first-hand what customers in these emerging markets are looking for," said Doucet. "To achieve our goal of ensuring that our fishing and seafood-processing industry will be sustainable, viable and self-sufficient, we must focus our efforts on market diversification."
New Brunswick is Canada's fourth-largest exporter of fish and seafood, with total production in 2007 exceeding $724 million. Currently, 85 per cent of seafood exports are destined for the United States market.
Doucet said that the recent economic downturn in the United States reinforces the importance of the Department of Fisheries working with New Brunswick processors to explore new export opportunities, reducing the province's dependence on any one export market.
The seafood companies taking part in the Dubai mission are: Trico Seafoods; Produits Belle Baie Ltée; LA Trading Co. Ltd.; Pêcheries GEM; Pêcheries St.Paul Ltée/Edmond Gagnon Ltd.; and Gourmet Chef Packers. The following companies will take part in the China Fisheries and Seafood Expo: Connors Bros.; International Seafood and Bait; Moncton Fish Market; LA Trading Co. Ltd.; and Pêcheries St. Paul Ltée/Edmond Gagnon Ltd.
