FREDERICTON (CNB) - New Brunswick seafood exports in 2008 increased both in volume and value. The figures were contained in export numbers for the past year released by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Total domestic exports for New Brunswick climbed to slightly more than $756 million, representing a 13.5 per cent increase over 2007. The volume of exports in 2008 increased by five per cent, climbing close to 98 million kilograms.
"That we were able to increase our exports in what was without question a challenging year, clearly shows me that the efforts to transform our fishing and seafood processing industry to become market-driven are paying off," said Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet.
New Brunswick remains Canada's fourth-largest seafood exporter, with lobster, snow crab, salmon and herring counting among the top exports.
