FREDERICTON (CNB) - The following statement regarding the closing of nominations for the Monday, May 11, municipal byelections was issued today by Local Government Minister Bernard LeBlanc:
"Nominations for the upcoming municipal byelections will be closing Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m.
"There are a number of vacancies to be filled. It is important that our municipalities have their full complement of elected officials. The upcoming byelections will be the last opportunity at this time to fill vacant municipal seats for mayors and councillors.
"Being an elected member of council provides an opportunity to make decisions that have an impact on day-to-day life in communities across New Brunswick, benefiting the community, its residents, and businesses.
"I encourage interested residents in Alma, Baker Brook, Balmoral, Blacks Harbour, Eel River Crossing, Maisonette, Nackawic, Neguac, Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska, Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphael, St. Stephen, and Tracadie-Sheila, who meet the eligibility requirements, to run for municipal office.
"We need women and men, young people and those with experience. We need people who want to serve their community to improve the quality of life of residents.
"We need strong, viable local governments to achieve our goal of self-sufficiency."
