CAMPOBELLO ISLAND (CNB) - The provincial government is investing $170,000 to help build a new fire station in the local service district (LSD) of Campobello Island. The funding was announced today by Local Government Minister Chris Collins.

"We are pleased to assist the LSD of Campobello with the construction of its new fire hall," said Collins. "I commend the firefighters brigades and the Campobello Island local governance committee for their hard work on this file."

Each year, the Department of Local Government commits $500,000 to help LSDs buy emergency equipment and construct or maintain fire halls and recreation facilities.

"In 2009, the Campobello fire department acquired a new fire truck, and, as a result, we were unable to house all of our fire apparatus," said Tim Martin, Campobello fire chief. "The new fire hall will not only allow us to store all of our trucks, but we will also have a little room for future growth. The existing fire hall is 30 years old, so it will be nice to see the expansion as it has become difficult to operate out of this hall for the last few years."

The new 288-sq.-m (3,200-sq.-ft.) building will improve safety for residents and area businesses, enable the fire department to meet the long-term needs of the community and provide more reliable services. The facility will also be less expensive to operate as a result of increased energy efficiency.

"Firefighters and fire services are vital to helping New Brunswickers be safe and secure in this province," said Collins. "I am confident that this new building will assist the Campobello Island firefighters in their duties and contribute to building a safer New Brunswick as we progress on our way to self-sufficiency."

Construction should begin later this spring and is expected to be completed in the fall.
