FREDERICTON (CNB) - The termination of the appointment of Hugh Doherty as supervisor of the Village of Riverside-Albert was announced today by Local Government Minister Chris Collins. The move comes after two vacant council positions were filled during the May 10 municipal byelections.
"The appointment of Hugh Doherty as supervisor was necessary following the resignation of the mayor and one councillor," said Collins.
Pursuant to the Control of Municipalities Act, the municipality was placed under supervision of the province when the resignations resulted in an insufficient number of council members to constitute a quorum.
The position of mayor has been filled by C. Dale Elliott and the councillor's position by Nancy L. Dalton. Doherty's appointment was terminated by the lieutenant-governor-in-council on May 27.
"I thank Mr. Doherty for his efforts in assuring that the on-going business and accountability of the Village of Riverside-Albert was carried on in an efficient and professional manner," said Collins.
