New deadline for free testing in Harvey area (08/07/11)

NB 1022

July 11, 2008

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The provincial government is extending the deadline for free testing for uranium in water and radon in air for homes and businesses in Harvey Station and along Route 3 to York Mills.

Based on participation to date, the deadline for free water testing is now Aug. 31 to give all area residents enough time to collect and submit their water samples for testing. Bottles and instructions for water sampling can be picked up and dropped off at the Harvey Station village office between 8 a.m. and noon on Mondays and Thursdays.

Aug. 31 is also the deadline to register for radon-in-air testing to be conducted over the winter, when conditions are optimal for the most accurate results. Residents should call the Public Health regional office at 506-453-2830 to register for radon gas testing.

Water and air test results will be reported to individual homeowners and business owners.

Free testing was announced in May after the Department of Health became aware that the results of a 1981 study to identify levels of uranium in water and radon in air may not have been reported to individuals in the Harvey area who participated in the study.

The Department of Health advises all private well owners to test their water. Testing should be done twice annually for microbiological contamination and every two years for inorganic compounds such as arsenic and uranium.
