REXTON (CNB) - The annual public meeting of the Provincial Suicide Prevention Committee will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Maple Lane Resort (formerly the Richibucto River Resort) in Rexton.
Guest speakers will speak about the importance of support groups for those who are grieving following a suicide, and about First Nations' initiatives on suicide prevention.
Since 2000, the annual meeting has taken place around Sept. 10 in order to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day.
About 100 New Brunswickers die by suicide each year. The risk is higher among men aged 20 to 40, young people, seniors, and those who have lost a close friend or family member through suicide.
The New Brunswick Suicide Prevention Program mobilizes agencies and individuals through 13 suicide prevention community committees. The program aims to reduce New Brunswick's suicide rate by improving access to services and increasing the population's awareness.
