SAINT JOHN (CNB) - Tenders worth $4.6 million for foundation and steel work associated with expansion of the emergency department at the Saint John Regional Hospital have been awarded to Avondale Construction of Saint John. Ed Doherty, minister of supply and services, made the announcement today.

"I am very pleased that this important infrastructure project is moving forward," said Doherty. "There will be a lot of construction activity on-site as steel and foundation work begins over the coming weeks and continues into the fall."

The $40-million project is proceeding on schedule, and consists of a single-storey, 3,970-square-metre addition to the hospital. Rock excavation, site preparation and construction of a new emergency room entrance are now complete. The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2010.

"This project will improve the quality and accessibility of health-care services for Saint John-area residents, and provide the necessary facilities to accommodate the hospital's designation as a Level 1 trauma facility," said Health Minister Mike Murphy.

Funding for the expansion is being provided through the Department of Health's capital budget, which totals $67 million in 2009-10.
