TRACADIE-SHEILA (CNB) - The ninth public annual meeting of the Provincial Suicide Prevention Committee will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Tracadie-Sheila.
The meeting will feature a panel of experts, community members and representatives from the 14 community suicide prevention committees in the province. Discussions will include common issues, past accomplishments and future goals. The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Auberge Centre Ville.
Every year since 2000 the meeting has taken place around Sept. 10 to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day. It is expected that 20 nations will take part this year in recognizing this day.
About 100 New Brunswickers die by suicide each year. The risk is highest among 20-to-40-year-old men, young people, seniors, and those who have lost a close friend or family member through suicide.
The New Brunswick Suicide Prevention Program mobilizes agencies and individuals through the 14 community suicide prevention committees. The program aims to reduce New Brunswick's suicide rate by improving access to services and increasing the population's awareness.
New Brunswickers may find more information on suicide prevention initiatives online, by contacting their local mental health centre, or on the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention website.
