MONCTON (CNB) - A modern and expanded emergency and trauma department at The Moncton Hospital is opening its doors and will be fully operational on Friday, Oct. 2.
Health Minister Mary Schryer and Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty toured the facility today with Moncton Hospital staff members, senior officials from Regional Health Authority (RHA) B, and representatives of the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation.
"The new emergency and trauma department is part of a $47-million ambulatory care centre addition to The Moncton Hospital, which includes a state-of-the-art laboratory, a new ambulance entrance and underground parking," said Schryer. "It will significantly improve health-care services by offering patients a modern facility with the latest equipment and design."
The project is the largest capital investment in The Moncton Hospital since it was built more than 50 years ago.
"Bringing this project to fruition required the collaboration of countless individuals during the planning, design and construction phases," said Doherty. "I am pleased to see that those efforts have resulted in a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance the provision of health care to New Brunswickers."
The expanded emergency room and trauma department have been designed to improve patient care.
"The completion of this extension to The Moncton Hospital is exciting, not only for our health authority, but for the community we serve," said Donald J. Peters, president and chief executive officer of RHA B. "We are truly excited to unveil the new, enlarged and updated emergency and trauma department. It will certainly enhance the level of health care we deliver."
The improvements to the department and the acquisition of new equipment and technology will improve health-care delivery and enable health-care providers to serve their patients better.
"We are grateful to the community for its support in helping to make this new emergency and trauma department a reality," said David Holt, vice chair of The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation.
A portion of the $7.5 million raised through the foundation's Healthy Returns Capital Campaign funded equipment for the department.
The emergency and trauma department are in the new extension to The Moncton Hospital. It will continue to be accessed from MacBeath Avenue. A parking lot accommodating about 25 vehicles is available for emergency patients.
The Moncton Hospital serves patients from Greater Moncton and all of New Brunswick. It is also part of the provincial trauma network, and it is an important referral centre for patients from Prince Edward Island and northern Nova Scotia.
