FREDERICTON (CNB) - The following statement is issued by Greg Byrne as acting health minister in recognition of National Nursing Week, May 10-16:
National Nursing Week provides a great opportunity to celebrate nurses' commitment to providing outstanding patient-centred care. This year's theme, Nursing: You Can't Live Without It!, is in recognition of the vital contribution these dedicated health-care providers make to the success of our health-care system.
The foundation of our health-care system is the devoted team of the health-care workers who provide direct patient care to New Brunswick residents. The Provincial Health Plan recognizes that maintaining and recruiting a strong health-care workforce is vital.
Since October 2006, there have been exciting developments in nursing. We have added 357 new nurses, net, to the province, and 25 nurse practitioners to the system. There are 54 nurse practitioners working in New Brunswick.
We are also supporting the recruitment and retention of nurses in hard-to-recruit positions, through the New Brunswick Forgivable Loan Program for New Graduate Nurses. This program will provide up to $10,000 for nursing graduates who accept hard-to-fill positions.
I take this opportunity to recognize all of New Brunswick's nurses for the role they play in our provincial health-care system. Our success in improving health care is due to the hard work, dedication and commitment of these people who make a difference in the lives of provincial residents each and every day.
