Tender awarded for new psychiatric hospital (10/05/21)

NB 783

May 21, 2010

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The provincial government has awarded the first construction tender for the new psychiatric hospital to replace the aging Restigouche Hospital Centre.

The $392,000 contract has been awarded to LCL Excavation Inc. of Charlo for the relocation of sanitary and storm sewers. Work is expected to start in the coming weeks. Additional tender calls are expected later this spring for partial demolition and other site preparations.

"We look forward to receiving proposals from the development community and engaging a private-sector partner in the development of this facility," said Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty. "These proposals will allow our government to build a modern facility that meets the needs of the community."

The provincial government intends to build the facility as a public-private partnership. It is seeking expressions of interest from private developers capable of designing, constructing and financing the facility while providing major maintenance over 30 years.

"This facility will have an increased focus on rehabilitation to better serve individuals with mental illness," said Greg Byrne, acting health minister. "The Department of Health has engaged officials from the regional health authorities, families and persons with mental illness in the planning process for this state-of-the-art facility, which will provide care to vulnerable residents with serious mental-health illness."

The centre will have 140 beds and replace the existing one, which is more than 50 years old. It will have more than 40 new staff members to support improved therapeutic interventions for patients.

The Restigouche Hospital Centre serves individuals primarily from Regional Health Authority A who require mid- to long-term psychiatric services; the facility also provides provincial forensic services.

The new centre is one of several initiatives undertaken by the provincial government to improve mental-health services. Others include:
