FREDERICTON (CNB) - Jack Walsh, a New Brunswick Crown prosecutor, was awarded the prestigious John Tait Award of Excellence by the Canadian Bar Association in Montreal on Aug. 18.

The Award of Excellence is presented to one public sector lawyer in Canada every year, in honour of outstanding accomplishment.

"I can't think of anyone more deserving of the John Tait Award than Jack Walsh," Justice Minister Bradley Green said while giving a speech at the ceremony. "He is genuinely admired and respected, not only by his colleagues and those who know him in New Brunswick, but also held in the highest esteem by his peers from coast to coast."

Walsh first began working as a prosecutor in Miramichi, the community where he was born and raised, in 1987. He holds degrees from both the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University. As a prosecutor, he worked hard to improve the quality of life for those victimized by crime and family violence.

He is known for his work on a prosecution team that used DNA evidence against the accused, one of Canada's most infamous serial killers, Allan Legere. This was one of the first times that this form of evidence was used in the country. Walsh is currently considered to be one of Canada's most recognized legal experts in forensic DNA typing as it applies to criminal law.

"He has crusaded all his life to make the province of New Brunswick a better place to live and to improve the civil service of New Brunswick," Green said, "and he has succeeded admirably on both fronts."

The award was presented during the Canadian Legal Conference and honours John Tait, an outstanding lawyer and public servant who passed away in 1999.
