Public hearings / Select Committee on Public Automobile Insurance (03/09/24)

NB 829

Sept. 24, 2003

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Select Committee on Public Automobile Insurance will hold open house sessions and public hearings throughout the province to solicit input, comments and ideas from New Brunswickers on public automobile insurance.

This all-party committee of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick is tasked with recommending a public insurance system that is fair, affordable and accessible to all New Brunswick drivers.

Public hearings are being held throughout the province so that the committee can hear what New Brunswickers think about a public insurance system. Members of the committee will be there to discuss the issues and options. Residents are encouraged to be vocal about what characteristics are important to them in a proposed public automobile insurance system. All aspects of a public insurance system will be explored, including costs, trade implications and impact on services, trades and professions.

As a guide to issues and options, or to help in preparation of presentations and questions for the committee, the public can refer to the Consultation Paper on Public Auto Insurance in New Brunswick. The paper describes the public automobile insurance models currently in use in Canada. It also explains how the private insurance system works in New Brunswick today. The consultation paper is available from the Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly and on the Internet at . http://www.gnb.ca/legis/index-e.asp.

At the public hearings, formal presentations may be made to the committee. Individuals, organizations and other interested groups are invited to make presentations. Those who wish to be scheduled to appear before the committee to make a formal presentation should advise the Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly by Oct. 16. Those who would prefer to submit a written brief should do so by Nov. 14. Written briefs may be submitted by mail, fax or e-mail.

Members of the Legislative Assembly who make up the committee will also be available for informal discussions during the open house sessions.
