Disability Awareness Week to be observed (10/05/11)

NB 711

May 11, 2010

SHIPPAGAN (CNB) - Disability Awareness Week begins with a kick-off this year on Saturday, May 29, at a ceremony at le Vie Autonome Péninsule Acadienne Inc. (the Acadian Peninsula independent living centre) in Shippagan. The theme for this year's campaign, which runs until Saturday, June 5, is Yes We Can!

More than 50 events have been running across the province since February to increase awareness about the abilities of persons living with disabilities. About 17.2 per cent (125,000 people) of New Brunswickers live with some kind of physical disability. As society ages, it is expected that more and more people will have to find new ways of working, participating in social and recreational activities and performing everyday tasks.

This year, four contests are being held with the support of Disability Awareness Week sponsors. More than $5,000 in prizes and promotional items will be available. The contests are open to New Brunswick residents only:

More information about these events and Disability Awareness Week is available from the Premier's Council on the Status of Disabled Persons. Visit its website or call the office toll-free, 1-800-442-4412.
