FREDERICTON (CNB) - New Brunswickers are being encouraged to submit nominations for the eighth Family and Community Volunteer Awards.
"This is your opportunity to recognize a volunteer, someone in your community, or someone who may have affected your life or the lives of people around you," said Brian Kenny, minister responsible for the community non-profit organizations secretariat.
The awards are presented in four categories: youth, adult, senior, and organization. Nominations will be judged on contributions made to New Brunswick families and/or communities, and winners will be announced during National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, 2009. Winners in each category will present $1,000 to the New Brunswick non-profit organization of their choice.
This is the first time that the secretariat has hosted the awards, which were established in recognition of the United Nations General Assembly's proclamation of 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers.
In March of 2008 the New Brunswick government released Delivering on the Blueprint, in which it committed to working toward building a stronger non-profit sector. The awards are one way that New Brunswickers can show respect and recognition for volunteers.
The deadline for nominations is Feb. 6, 2009. For the nomination form and more information on the awards program, visit the Community Non-Profit Organizations website, or call 1-888-295-4545.
