Forty-four summer mentorship positions open for female students (04/01/28)

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Young women looking to break into careers that have traditionally been male-dominated can get a head start this summer through the Summer Mentorship Program for Female Students.

The program offers up to 44 positions for university students to be paired with civil servants working either in a field that does not traditionally have large numbers of women, or in senior management. Participants in 2003 included an engineer, a forestry engineer, a geologist, a veterinarian and a fisheries biologist.

Students work for 14 weeks with a mentor who supports, guides and challenges the students in developing their skills.

The program is co-coordinated by the Office of Human Resources, with funding provided by the Department of Training and Employment Development. The program has received an exemption from the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission to permit a female-only uptake.

Interested university students can apply for a summer mentorship position through the same application used for the regular Student Employment and Experience Development (SEED) Program. There is a specific section on these applications for individuals interested in the mentorship program. These provincial applications are available at university campuses, regional offices of Training and Employment Development and Human Resource Service Centres.

The departments involved in the program and the type of work done by students varies from year to year depending upon the mentors who volunteer to participate in the program and the summer jobs they identify within their work units. Interested students should apply by March 12, 2004.
