Workforce profile tabled (04/03/30)

FREDERICTON (CNB) - A workforce profile detailing the size of the New Brunswick Public Service was tabled in the Legislative Assembly today.

The profile shows a total of 44,611 employees in the civil service, school and hospital systems as of Dec. 31, 2003. This compares to 44,345 at the same time the previous year.

"We have adopted this profile as a means of providing an accurate, comprehensive and broad-based measure of the actual size of the public service," Human Resources Minister Rose-May Poirier said. "This profile will be compiled and issued every year and will allow the members of the Legislature and the public to gain a better understanding of the size and scope of the workforce that provides the services New Brunswickers depend upon."

The profile provides a breakdown for each of the three components of the public service including 12,148 for Part I which includes the departments and is often referred to as the Civil Service.

Part II is comprised of the school system and had 15,922 employees as of December 31, 2003 while Part III which encompasses the hospital system had 16,541 employees.

The workforce profile also provides a breakdown of permanent and temporary, full-time and part-time employees. The age distribution of the public service is also provided.

The workforce profile replaces the previously-used budgetary measure of Full-Time-Equivalents or FTEs which had been used in Part I of the public service, but which measured funded positions rather than actual people. The workforce profile is based upon information derived from the human resource/payroll systems of Parts I, II and III.

The workforce profile is available to the public online at: http://www.gnb.ca/0163/index-e.asp.
