FREDERICTON (CNB) - The province will not appeal a Court of Queen's Bench ruling affecting casual workers, Human Resources Minister Rick Brewer announced today.
On June 17, 2009, Justice Paulette Garnett ruled that the definition of employee in the Public Service Labour Relations Act violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by excluding casual workers from collective bargaining. Garnett gave the province 12 months to amend the legislation.
"Our government will comply with the ruling and move forward with amendments to the act," said Brewer. "Over the last few months we have been working with union leaders to address their concerns about the rights of casual workers. We will continue to consult with them as we make changes to the legislation."
