FREDERICTON (CNB) - Fifty-seven students enrolled in the New Brunswick Community College system have been awarded Wage Gap Action Plan scholarships. Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jody Carr and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Joan MacAlpine-Stiles made the announcement today.

"The $150,000-scholarship program helps remove obstacles and provides encouragement to students exploring a variety of career options," MacAlpine-Stiles said. "Job clustering has been identified as one of four contributors to the wage gap. This program was designed to help reduce the wage gap, with the added benefit of addressing New Brunswick's skills shortages at the same time."

The scholarship program is part of the Wage Gap Action Plan, and is designed to encourage women and men to enter non-traditional careers. The scholarships were developed to encourage students to seek careers in trades, technology, and other sectors where gender participation to date has been limited. The goal of the scholarship program is to help reduce the impact which job clustering has on New Brunswick's wage gap.

Each non-renewable scholarship awarded has a value of $2,600, which is equivalent to the value of a full year's tuition at NBCC.

"I am particularly pleased at the number and quality of applications this year," Carr said. "This helped achieve the goal of awarding all the available funding. It is also an indication that more students are considering non-traditional career paths, which is an encouraging sign for a strong and diverse workforce."

Carr said that scholarships such as this are helping New Brunswick become the smart province and achieve the goal of having the highest increase in workers with post-secondary education in Canada within five years.
