FREDERICTON (CNB) - The appointments of three new members to the New Brunswick Public Libraries Board were announced today by Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jody Carr.

The new members are Jacqueline Emond from Saint-François, representing the public at large; Berthier Bérubé from Bathurst, representing the Chaleur Library Region Forum; and Judy Heron from Rothesay, representing the Saint John Library Region Forum. They will serve a three-year term.

"I am proud to appoint these new members, who bring a wide range of experience to the New Brunswick Public Libraries Board," Carr said.

Established in 1997, the New Brunswick Public Libraries Board advises the minister responsible for this sector on policy, service levels, and provincial standards for the public library system. The board generally meets three times a year. Its next meeting will take place on Aug. 24 in Fredericton.

"The board plays an important role in nurturing New Brunswick as the smart province," Carr said. "It gives us valuable advice on innovative ways to achieve the goals identified in the Quality Learning Agenda."

The New Brunswick Public Libraries Board consists of several members from the general public and five elected members, each representing one of the five library-region forums. All board members are formally appointed by the minister.

"Funding to the public library system has been increased by $1 million this year, and last week funding was announced for 26 new library positions," Carr said. "Government is committed to making New Brunswick's public libraries an even better place to learn."

The new appointees join members Franscine Anderson from Moncton, Norbert Gauvin from Fredericton, Carol Gavaris from St. Andrews, Arisma Losier from Tracadie-Sheila, Margie MacDonald from Miramichi, Roseline Maillet from Saint-Antoine-de-Kent, Donald Porter from Woodstock, Judith Wheaton from Central Blissville, and Roseline Wilson-Cormier from Dieppe. The executive director of New Brunswick Public Library Service, Sylvie Nadeau, is an ex-officio non-voting member.
