FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Government of New Brunswick is providing funding of $196,000 to the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative (NB Film Co-op) to improve its capacity to meet the evolving needs of the labour force.
Taking part in today's announcement were Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Ed Doherty, and NB Film Co-op Executive Director Tony Merzetti.
The grant will go toward funding the two-year project designed to ensure the existence of a well trained crew and personnel in New Brunswick's film, television and new media industry. It will develop a curriculum that will be tailored to the needs of the industry, such as skills enhancement and the development of human resources.
"I am pleased that we are able to provide funding that will go towards maintaining a healthy film industry in New Brunswick," Doherty said. "It is important that government works to develop programs that will promote New Brunswick's distinct cultural identity and foster a sense of belonging."
"The co-op is excited to have the opportunity to expand upon its professional development activities with advanced courses and on-the-job training," Merzetti said. "It will directly contribute to the development of essential crew personnel for the burgeoning provincial film and television industry."
The NB Film Co-op, now in its 28th year of operation, is a non-profit charitable organization that specializes in the production of 16mm and digital films. It provides broad-ranging support including creative support and mentoring, project development assistance, production and editing equipment, human resources, networking opportunities, and informal writer, director and actor labs.
