FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Province of New Brunswick has recently provided more than $320,000 for over 200 New Brunswickers to receive training in a variety of sectors. Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Ed Doherty made the announcement today.
"Today's funding announcement highlights government's commitment to ensuring that New Brunswick has a well-trained labour force that is fully capable of meeting today's job skill requirements," Doherty said. "As we progress further into the 21st century, it is vital that government works to ensure its residents are ready for tomorrow's jobs today."
As a result of the province's Training and Skills Development (TSD) program, these New Brunswickers have upgraded their skills in specialized areas such as excavator and dozer training, GE gas turbine familiarization training and scaffolding training. The total funding for these training programs is $320,600 since mid-November 2006.
"It's great to see government help prepare people for not only a job, but for a future as well," Doherty said. "In order to advance economic development and job creation, we need to continue to develop solid working relationships with our partners in industry."
Some of the organizations which partner with the province to offer these training opportunities include the New Brunswick Regional Council of Carpenters, Millwrights and Allied Workers, the International Union of Operating Engineers and the Labourers' Training Institute of New Brunswick.
Doherty said these partnerships and strategic initiatives are critical to helping New Brunswick achieve its goal of self-sufficiency by 2026.
The TSD program provides assistance to eligible unemployed persons requiring training to return to long-term employment. To receive training assistance, persons are evaluated and then selected through a case management process.
The program is funded by the Province of New Brunswick and the Government of Canada through the Canada New Brunswick Labour Market Development Agreement. For more information on the TSD program, contact your local Post-Secondary Education and Training regional office or visit the program website.
