FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Government of New Brunswick recently invested more than $180,000 for specialized training initiatives throughout the province, Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Ed Doherty announced today.

"By continuing to provide funding for specialized training we are working to ensure that the people of this province have the necessary skills and training required by today's employers," Doherty said. "We must help prepare people for not only their career, but also for their future."

Since the end of October, the department has partnered with the New Brunswick Regional Council of Carpenters and the International Union of Operating Engineers to help train 104 New Brunswickers. Training was offered in Brantville, Miramichi and Saint John in a variety of fields including side boom, scaffolding and GE gas turbine familiarization.

Specialized training is offered through the government's Training and Skills Development (TSD) program. It provides assistance to eligible unemployed persons requiring training to return to long-term employment. Each participant will also be required to meet with a departmental employment counselor to determine Employment Insurance eligibility and to complete appropriate TSD forms.

"From day one, our government indicated to the people of New Brunswick that one of our main goals was to make economic development a priority again," the minister said. "The ongoing funding through this program is evident that this is still one of our priorities."

The minister also added that economic development is a critical part of the government's plan to achieve self-sufficiency by the year 2026, as outlined in the Charter for Change. The department will continue in its role to work hard on behalf of all New Brunswickers to help achieve these goals.

The TSD program is funded by the Province of New Brunswick and the Government of Canada through the Canada New Brunswick Labour Market Development Agreement. For more information on the TSD program, contact your local Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour regional office.
