"Our public libraries provide a foundation for literacy and lifelong learning, giving New Brunswickers the tools they need to enrich their lives and be informed and literate in our province," Doherty said. "This is a great day for the people in this community, and I commend Mayor Vautour on his tireless efforts in working to establish this important community resource."

"With the signing of this MOU, a public library in Cap-Pelé moves another step closer toward realization," Vautour said. "We are the only municipality with a population over 2000 residents without public library service. This project is certainly very important for our municipality, because public library service is a basic tool in the development and education of children as well as adults."

The MOU provides an outline of the roles and responsibilities of each partner in the establishment of the new library. The Village of Cap-Pelé will invest $1 million in the construction of the facility, which will be about 495 sq. m. (5,500 sq. ft.) The province has committed to investing $185,000 toward an initial library collection, network and technology infrastructure, and the creation of two full-time positions.

Construction on the new library is expected to begin this spring. The Cap-Pelé library, which will be the 62nd public library in New Brunswick, is expected to be open by late 2008.
