FREDERICTON (CNB) - The following statement was issued today by Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Ed Doherty, on the occasion of North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) week, May 4-10.
"The purpose of NAOSH week is to focus the attention of employers, employees and the general public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace.
"Launched 11 years ago, NAOSH week is an annual initiative co-ordinated by safety-oriented organizations from Canada, the United States and Mexico.
"NAOSH week reminds us of just how important it is to encourage responsible practices to prevent injuries and illnesses at work, at home, and in our communities.
"Workplace injuries and illnesses affect not only the worker, they also affect family, friends and communities. So during NAOSH Week and throughout the year, we must remember at all times that safety is everyone's business.
"During 2007, there were eight fatalities and more than 11,800 workers injured in this province. On behalf of the Government of New Brunswick, I wish to convey my thoughts and concerns to these people, their loved ones and friends.
"Workplace injuries and illnesses represent a significant financial burden on individual workers, businesses, and the economy.
"As minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, I consistently promote the need for ongoing development and the encouragement of safety at work.
"The Workplace Health Safety and Compensation Commission works closely with employers, the business community, and health and safety professionals to underscore the need for greater prevention.
"I salute the numerous employers who are consistently gauging the state of health and safety in their workplaces. They are to be commended for focusing on workplace health and safety policies and programs; training needs of staff; and legal obligations of employers, supervisors and other workplace parties.
"These are critically important measures aimed at the identification, assessment and elimination of harmful workplace exposures. Together, we can reduce workplace injuries and illness by encouraging new health, safety and environmental activities.
"I encourage all New Brunswickers to be aware of NAOSH celebrations taking place in communities throughout the province.
"Let us all reflect on the need to be proactive in protecting future generations while remembering and honouring those who have been seriously or fatally injured on the job. May we be committed to achieving hazard-free workplaces in New Brunswick."
