FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Government of New Brunswick recently invested more than $497,000 for specialized training initiatives throughout the province, Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Ed Doherty announced today.
"We have been working cooperatively with industrial organizations to focus on strengthening New Brunswick's workforce through specialized skills training," Doherty said. "This training will assist union members in securing employment in future construction projects."
Since the beginning of 2008, the Government of New Brunswick has partnered with the New Brunswick Regional Council of Carpenters, Millwrights and Allied Workers and the Labourers' Training Institute of New Brunswick to help train 290 New Brunswickers through Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour's Training and Skills Development (TSD) program.
Participants were selected by the partnering organizations to receive training in areas including scaffolding, door and hardware training, welding, and GE gas turbine familiarization. Training took place in Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John, Brantville, Miramichi, Balmoral and the Tobique First Nation.
"As stated in the Charter for Change, we are committed to growing our labour force to position our province as a leader in economic development and to achieve self-sufficiency by 2026," the minister said. "We will continue to work with industry partners such as the Regional Council and the Labourers' Training Institute to help New Brunswickers access more marketable skills, and assist employers with their human resource needs so that we can all be engaged and be successful in New Brunswick."
The TSD program provides assistance to eligible unemployed persons who require training to return to long-term employment. To receive training and development funding, persons are evaluated and then selected through a case management process. For more information on the TSD program please visit the program website or contact your local Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour office.
The TSD program is funded by the Province of New Brunswick and the Government of Canada through the Canada New Brunswick Labour Market Development Agreement.
